Flying Lotus’ purple patch continues with the release of Jeremiah Jae’s debut album, Raw Money Raps – the latest record from Brainfeeder, and one that contains some of FlyLo’s most satisfying productions to date.
Raw Money Raps sees the California label take a classic turn. FlyLo’s production is less aqueous, more earthbound than we have come to expect, with the results pitched somewhere close to Madlib and Freddie Gibbs’ excellent recent collaborations. Meanwhile, as on standout track ‘Cat Fight’, Jae’s louche vocal bears comparison with Black On Both Sides-era Mos Def – a world-weary delivery, just behind the beat, which transmits as much meaning as the lyrics themselves.
