London’s J Churcher expands his desert-tinged palette with squalling single “Yesterday"
London-based musician J Churcher made a dreamlike debut with “In the Summer” last September. The tune’s warm, folksome acoustics brought to mind Mazzy Star’s acid-washed desert reveries and evoked memories of seasons past while inhabiting a landscape all its own.
Churcher expands his desert-tinged palette with his new single “Yesterday”, veering solidly into epic desert rock territory with squalling guitar feedback and drums that recall The Jesus and Mary Chain’s weighty and dense textures.
A sonic sandstorm with Churcher’s vocals as the epicenter, the song describes a relationship’s dissolution. The final lyric “I can’t keep up with you” reads as a piercingly clear-sighted observation. This boldly stated truth rides out on a wave of distortion and leaves us eager for Churcher's future work.
“Yesterday” is Churcher’s first single for London label 37 Adventures and is slated for release on 11 March.
