With a release of the remastered My Bloody Valentine catalogue on the horizon, one suspects there will be yet another mini-explosion of noisy-but-fey guitar bands towards the end of the year.
Getting in before the rush, Hotel Mexico have built their sound on a firm foundation of Shields-esque fuzz-pop – but, as ‘Wolves Running Through The Desert’ demonstrates, the Kyoto band’s reference points stretch further than Loveless. The b-side to their current Double Denim-released 7″ ends up more Wakeman-infused sci-fi score than reverb-drenched bedroom scuzz, suggesting that Hotel Mexico’s horizons are more distant than either their hometown, or the country from which they take their name.
‘A Space In The Loveless Field’ / ‘Wolves Running Through The Desert’ is out now on Double Denim.
