Well, they’ll never get anywhere with a name like that, etc., etc…
Hot Panda are further evidence that some of the year’s best new music is set to come from Canada. The Alberta four-piece toured Europe with the Von Bondies a couple of years ago, and there is indeed something of the Jack White nemeses’ sound here, particularly in the tightly spider-like descending guitar lines. But Hot Panda have a much more acute sense of when to put on the brakes, such that ‘Future Markets’ never quite crescendos, instead collapsing in on itself in a fumble of cymbals and growls.
‘Future Markets’ is taken from Hot Panda’s forthcoming third album Go Outside, out 17 July on Mint.
