Hercules & Love Affair are one of those lucky few bands that enjoy support from virtually every corner of the musical world. You are just as likely to see their latest album, Blue Songs, being picked over by The Wire as you are to hear its standout tracks being played at Club NME.
This appeal is due to a unique combination of a remarkable breadth of ambition and an undeniable melodicism. ‘Painted Eyes’, the opening track from Blue Songs, is a perfect illustration of this. It is at heart a straight-up, dancefloor-beckoning pop song. But a guest appearance from vocalist (and performance artist) Aerea Negrot lends it a new depth and an added potency.
‘Painted Eyes’ is out 18 April, but you can hear the track in full below. In a slightly uncanny, disco-embracing parallel world, this is the sound of all the best nights out you’ve ever had.
