Norwegian Heidi Musum drops stunning and soulful debut single "Do You See"
As first singles go "Do You See" from 21-year-old Norwegian Heidi Musum is quite a statement, filled with soulful intent.
Having grown up on a small farm in Fetsund, Musum moved across the border to Stockholm in her teens to try and make a living as a musician, playing on the streets to earn some money. It was there she was spotted by TEN Music (the home of Icona Pop, Niki and the Dove and Zara Larsson) and following a relocation to Oslo to mend a broken heart, the label signed Musum to release her debut single.
"Do You See" is a beautiful start to what could be a huge career; it's full of Sade soulfulness, but Musum's voice has a pleasing crack and waver to it giving the track a much-needed edge, something which is mirrored in the lyrics which talk of drinking, getting tipsy and making impulsive decisions the singer may or may not come to regret. The backing is gentle electronic R&B, with a little of Musum's guitar shimmering in the background. It might be subtle, but as Musum herself says of her music, it's "the only place where I can free all the chaos and emotions in my body" and there's plenty happening beneath the surface here.
"Do You See" is out Friday 20 May via Ten Music Group but you can listen to - and watch - the premiere of the song below.
