Glowie bounces back with the bombastic "Throwback"
Re-emerging with her first taste of new music in two years, Glowie shines on “Throwback”.
24-year-old Icelandic popstar Glowie has returned with a rocket-fuelled, hyper-pop smash in the form of “Throwback”. Now fully independent since departing from her major-label deal with Columbia, the track is a statement of intent that lends itself to her newfound freedom.
Grandiose marching band drums introduce the track before “Throwback” becomes exaggerated with a hypnotic beat. Busy arrangements zigzag their way around Glowie’s vocals, unmistakeable even between her spoken-word raps and pitch shifts.
Fuelling the chaotic energy of the chorus with charged lines like “You better know that / I’m gonna come back”, Glowie delivers with an inescapable vigour that effortlessly pulls you in – dragging not just your feet, but your soul to the dancefloor.
The track also arrives with a larger-than-life music video that nods to Y2K culture and her hometown while oozing joy.
“I wrote the song at a time when I felt like I had lost some of my love for music,” explains Glowie. “I wanted to remember how I felt about music as a kid when I would dig through CDs at home, trying to find anything to listen to and when I’d find something I liked, I’d listen to it over and over and dance to it. Music was so precious to me and I wanted to feel that again. Writing ‘Throwback’ helped re-instil my love for music.”
Delving further into her now unfiltered and unrestrained artistry, she continues “I felt free and confident being an independent artist for the first time ever. I felt comfortable being myself and writing about whatever I wanted too, and I was hopeful about the future. I still am”.
