GIVERS unleash brilliant, towering new track "Growls" ahead of LP New Kingdom
Known for their experimentation and confluence of styles, Lafayette, Louisiana-based indie poppers GIVERS have upped the ante on "Growls", a majestic and enchanting piece of musical fantasy taken from their anticipated upcoming album New Kingdom.
There's a real feeling of intense emancipation in "Growls" - it lets go of many restrictions imposed by the strict rules of a pop song structure, and at the same time also eschews the parameters set by GIVERS' past material.
Like the best work of Aphex Twin, the track twists and mangles musical phrases into precisely-honed chaos but, unlike Aphex Twin, breathes to allow for soaring vocal and instrumental pop choruses to flourish - choruses so mighty they would crush the song under their own bombast were it not for GIVERS' knack for well-timed tension and release.
You'll find hallmarks from all sorts of influences here: there's world music in the percussion and in the joyous group chants, there's a huge, symphonic chorus line that sounds like Kid A-era Radiohead (had they gone on a Beatles-like "Indian retreat") and there's good old danceable indie-pop in the verses.
But also look out for the fierce, demanding bass dives and electro thwacks - for a milisecond you're reminded of Ed Banger circa 2006 - until you're quickly whisked off in an entirely new direction as guitar lines force their way in amongst the lofty strings and dream-pop vocals.
By the time your first listen of "Growls" comes to its abrupt end, you'll feel like Dorothy on her return to Kansas: reeling from the experience, but anxious to go back again.
"Growls" appears on GIVERS' new album, New Kingdom, released in the UK on 8 April via Glassnote Records.
