You might know Fatima from her numerous collaborations with Floating Points. Sam Shepherd produced her enjoyable but patchy Innervisions EP, and she contributed vocals to his Ensemble’s remarkable debut single all the way back in 2010. She is firmly ensconced with Shepherd’s Eglo label, and it is this imprint on which her new collaboration with Funkineven has just been released.
‘Phoneline’ sounds like the chattering of a demented phone exchange, slowly collapsing in on itself in a cluster of bleeps of the sort that one might find in the world’s most melodic malfunctioning video game. Meanwhile Fatima presides over the implosion, sultry and louche, in what is easily her most impressive vocal performance to date. It is at once humorous and absolutely huge, with Funkineven’s deranged touch-tone production bringing to mind the skewed pop approach of heyday Neptunes.
