Fanzine – Running Around // Song Of The Day #284
It’s been just over a year since Fanzine were last seen with any new material. You may recall ‘Susan’ from last summer, with its bittersweet guitar hook and Catholic Education-era Teenage Fanclub melody. Pure bliss. Aside from a handful of shows (including a show for TLOBF back in July ’10) and sporadic Twitter updates, they kind of slipped off the radar somewhat.
All is forgiven though, they return today with a free EP that showcases the exact formula that made us fall in love with them in the first place. The band have produced their own ‘Fanzine’ (naturally) in PDF format that contains a link to download four brand new songs: ‘Rocket Fuel’, ‘I Wanna Touch Your Hand’, ‘Low’ (produced by Max from Yuck) and today’s Song Of The Day ‘Running Around’.
With each track slightly different in execution and tone, the EP offers a real glimpse into the bands influences and inspiration. ‘Low’ is a life affirming slacker rock barnstormer – complete with Weezer-esque middle eight; ‘Rocket Fuel’ a slow paced West Coast pop number; ‘I Wanna Touch Your Hand’ echoes the spirit of Dinosaur Jr. at the peak of their powers whilst ‘Running Around’ embodies everything that was good about the Britpop era of yesteryear and could quite easily be a long lost outtake from Modern Life Is Rubbish. It’s brilliant, quite frankly.

Head over to the good folks at Transparent, Abeano and Double Denim for premieres of the remaining tracks from the EP.
