Ela Minus shares the shimmering, mesmeric “they told us it was hard, but they were wrong”
Ela Minus' first track since signing to Domino Records, “they told us it was hard, but they were wrong” showcases her hypnotic vocals and multi-skilled artistry.
Ela Minus, aka Colombian artist Gabriela Jimeno, started out as a drummer in hardcore band Ratón Pérez before moving to the US to study at the Berklee College of Music. After mastering jazz drumming and synthesizer design, she now produces warm and textured electronica that's entirely made on hardware. This affords a more organic feel to her sound, with an emotive and warm ambience.
Her debut single for Domino Record Co., “they told us it was hard, but they were wrong”, is accompanied by a hazy video that perfectly encapsulates the track's breathy, ethereal nature.
The song is a mix of Berlin minimal tech, part sensual Miss Kittin-style vocals with just a splash of LCD Soundsystem sparkle. The track's opening lines – “We always know in the first minute or so / If something’s worth staying for” – almost feels like a self-aware, meta-mission statement, but you’ll likely be hooked by the metronomic patterns by then, so challenge accepted!
Ela Minus will be out on tour with Caribou before the end of the year, as well as being scheduled for the rearranged Primavera and Coachella festivals. File under: could be huge.
