Listen: Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros – Remember To Remember
“We started ‘Remember To Remember’ in Louisiana a few years ago”, explains Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros’s Jade Castrinos. ”Some of the lyrics burst out as the music was being written, and some were taken from a little prayer I wrote. It’s a song of perseverance.”
Taking a lead on the track – from their third self-titled longplayer – Castrinos’ performance offers one of the record’s highlights. ‘Remember to Remember’ pitches a quirky and commanding Joplin-meets-Slick vocal alongside a psych-inked, hazy production that, in turn, nurtures and drives the track. “This record has a lot of firsts for us”, Castrinos explainsto Best Fit. “The song that has moved me to tears more than once is ‘This Life‘. There’s an eternal quality to it, particularly the ending. From the first moment I heard the music, it made me want to sing along.”
Born into musical surroundings, Castrinos accompanied her father on singalongs as a young girl. “We started a band when I was eleven and still play music together to this day. My mom says she can’t sing, but she sings like a birdie!”
While comparisons to some of the 60s greatest singers might hint at her early influences, the 25-year old from Tampa, Florida confesses a more recent obsession: “I am in love with Beach House,” she explains, “particularly Victoria Legrand’s voice. The way she sings is heaven to me; my favourite songs are ‘All the Years’, ‘On the Sea’, and ‘Real Love’.”
“I am also completely obsessed with Thom Yorke’s voice. I could listen to ‘True Love Waits’ a million times and it would never get old.”
