Dominic Sen makes sure their message is delivered loud and clear on “Hear Me”
Taken from the forthcoming debut album Visitor, to be released this autumn, Dominic Sen’s latest single “Hear Me” is a captivating statement of artistic intent.
The new project by songwriter, producer and artist Alex Cohen furthers the lore behind their extraterrestrial alter-ego Dominic Sen with a striking video for the new single “Hear Me”. Following in the wake of previous efforts “Atalanta” (a wishful reimagining of the mythical Greek character) and “Can’t Tell You”, the latest outing by the New York based artist is easily their most upbeat and rhythmic yet.
Propelled forth by a funky bassline and restless percussion, “Hear Me” is a dash of nostalgia offset by a lush undercurrent of synth - think the feel-good core of Talking Heads meets the blatant pop leanings of Cyndi Lauper for good measure. It is fitting then that the character of Dominic Sen “drifted around in space limbo until they intercepted the radio waves of broadcasts of 1980s and 1990s Earth”, with Sen subsequently arriving on terrafirma and falling in love with the “myth of Earthbound stardom”.
As a concept album, Visitor sees Sen perceive, evaluate and deconstruct gender through a unique lens of pop perfection, the accompanying visuals of “Hear Me” emulating the aesthetic of Star Wars heroine Rae as she partakes in her own journey of self-discovery. "With this video, I wanted to make something that not only outlines the heroine's journey and a reconciliation with the feminine, but that has explicit callbacks to several of my favourite fictional universes,” shares Sen of the new video.
“Some are more obvious than others, but I think my favourite bit is the four small rituals I perform to make the elemental artefacts appear. The movements are each a small nod to the four bending styles in Avatar: The Last Airbender."
