London newcomer Desta French continues to impress with the sultry "Like No Other" [Premiere]
London’s Desta French continues to impress on her second track “Like No Other”, premiering today on Best Fit.
At its core, “Like No Other” doesn’t stray far from the musical template laid out on her standout debut “Take You For Dead”: bright synths once again ricochet around a stuttering beat, and French continues to sound as if she’s singing directly into your ear on the verses before exploding with power on the chorus.
The combination is sweaty and seductive as French sings in hushed tones about “acting like I’m some other girl / I’m not sure that I’m meant to be / thinkin’ about you under the covers / you’re not alone in all that you need...” With each pointed word, she describes the kind of lust that can be overwhelming and, ultimately, dangerous.
But there’s no time for danger here. As the artist herself says, “It’s just about finding that wild chemistry with someone that makes you start thinking all kinds of stupid things. It's a hypnotising feeling and easy to get lost in.”
“Like No Other” is all about embracing that feeling, not dwelling on the potential consequences. The gorgeous Latin guitar solo and steel drum flares that highlight the song’s second half - both new additions to French’s arsenal - aren’t just tossed off embellishments: they also highlight the sense of escapism. And wherever it is French is escaping to, we’re happy to follow along.
