D.D Dumbo returns with the mind bending "Satan", reminding the world of his beastly talent
When D.D Dumbo appeared with his Tropical Oceans EP at the tail end of 2014, his talent was painfully apparent for all to see. Moments into its title track you are gripped by the ballsy, gently unsettling atmosphere created by his magical 12 string and wailing vocal. This was a a story-teller, a scene-setter as well as an immaculate multi-instrumentalist.
Now, after almost two years in the quiet, the Castlemaine, Australian - real name Oliver Hugh Perry - has returned with a thought-provoking, typically original cut. Alongside it's stunning, suitably cultic visuals, "Satan" is a twitching, rhythmically astute outing that showcases Perry's wildly imaginative songwriting style.
And yet the single develops into a wholly contagious number that becomes as catchy as it is left and undeniably arty, as Eastern influences collide with his knack for funky, dancing beats and colourful punctuation.
With a string of live dates (and what an impressive live show it is) set throughout June - including two London headlines and a slot a Field Day - the 4AD-signed Aussie is back with a bang, and his best work to date.
We won't worship "Satan" just yet, but D.D Dumbo deserves all the praise we can give.
