Pictures are developing a nice formula: give away a fantastic single on Bandcamp, then follow it up with an even better single on vinyl. Their latest release is courtesy of Liverpool’s Dauwd, who makes some of the most beautifully, carefully produced music we have heard in a long time.
The a-side, ‘Could It Be’, is an elaborately constructed piece of 2-step with a bass line that brings to mind ‘Up Down Up Down’ from Pictures alumni Koreless. But ‘Shimmer’ is the real star here – a stunning, melancholic piece that builds but somehow never crescendos. And, I think, samples a car horn.
A full-blown single from Dauwd is coming later in the year. In the meantime, download ‘Shimmer’ below and get ‘Could It Be’ here.
