Daniel Briskin meditates on isolation on the hypnotic "Boy On The Lake"
Recorded with Klaxons' Jamie Reynolds, 18-year-old wunderkind Daniel Briskin debuts his new single "Boy On The Lake", taken from his forthcoming mixtape Forever was a Feeling.
At the age of 18, most are contemplating their best-placed path in life, but Daniel Briskin has already found his. A singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, the North London artist does not rest on his laurels when it comes to finding his musical trajectory and making a mark.
Recorded with Kalxon’s Jamie Reynolds and JONAH down in Margate, Briskin’s single “Boy On The Lake” is disarmingly atmospheric. Drawing influence from pop culture and cult 2004 indie film Mean Creek - a pivotal plot point being a lakeside prank that unexpectedly spirals out of control, “Boy On The Lake” is an expansive and cinematic musing of the narrative.
Honing in on the protagonist of the film, Briskin attempts to empathise with their plight. Sutbly lulling the listener in with sparse synths and beats, the string refrain tugs at the heart; woven into “Boy On The Lake” is a palpable sense of sadness and regret.
Speaking of the track, Briskin describes how in Mean Creek he “saw someone feeling weird, remote and small, and it struck me that so much of human nature is based on a need for validation."
It was an observation that he found himself mulling over. “The last line of the song is ‘follow if you can’, and with that the mood shifts,” he continues. "In the end the song says: 'I’ve been this person, but please come with me on this journey I’m trying to have’. It’s about self-growth.”
