A couple of weeks back, black-clad Londoners Torches turned in a fantastic cover of Crushed Beaks’ ‘Close-Ups’. Today, Crushed Beaks return the favour. Their marching-band reworking of ‘VTOO’ places the vocal front and centre, while the guitars take the original melodies and twist them into delirious, Hogmanay-esque figures. It’s the sound of a conquering Scottish army retaking the Highlands – despite the fact that, as far as I know, both bands remain firmly ensconced in South and East London.
Torches and Crushed Beaks celebrate the launch of their split single with a show at Dalston’s Power Lunches this Saturday. Recent Best Fit Recordings signings I Ching will also appear. More details and tickets here.
