A few months back I wrote about a fantastic summer party in a New Cross garden. It involved an embryonic Crushed Beaks and a stage shaped like an eagle.
Also playing that afternoon were the much-missed Woe – one of the most entertaining and, for one reason or another, one of the most unfairly overlooked bands in London at the time. Woe, as I understand it, no longer exist. But their untimely demise has given us Corpse Lights – a band that has materialised, without warning, with one of the best releases of the last few months.
‘Yuplayaarp’ is taken from the duo’s debut three-track single. It’s a gripping, fugue-esque track that immediately brings to mind some of the more disturbing hinterlands of the Scandinavian dark-pop scene, played through a filter of unmistakably London production. Perhaps the most obvious comparison, though, is with Soap & Skin. There is the same combination of ecclesiastical arrangement, doctored vocals and fundamentally unsettling atmosphere here as on the Austrian artist’s extraordinary Lovetune for Vacuum.
