Cartae's "You Care" is an emotive slice of dancehall-infused R&B
Her Mini Kingz brethren have been making moves for time, but Cartae is striding out of the shadows with new single "You Care".
Over the last few years, dancehall has become the blueprint for pop bangers, but Cartae puts a decidedly low-key twist on the sound: familiar club rhythms are slowed down, and cushioned by her earnest, almost coy vocal and the song's lovestruck lyricism ("The rhythm in your heart / Shows that you care / I live for your melody / Show me who you are.") . Cartae designed some of the outfits showcased in the track's video, which sees her and her beau tail each other through a dense, neon-lit forest.
Cartae is the only female member of North London collective Mini Kingz, alongside BenjiFlow, Ragz Originale and Oscar #Worldpeace, and her debut EP, Minutes, is due out later this month. She reflects that the video for "You Care" is "basically what goes on inside my mind. I see everything in an abstract way. So this is my way of dealing with heartache and trying to move on whilst juggling the insecurities that come with chasing love."
