It’s strike day tomorrow. In celebration I was going to find something strike-related for today’s SOTD, but then I remembered that virtually no-one is bothering to make music with even the vaguest of political sentiments, despite the fact that the government is presiding over the wholesale dismantling of the creative industries. Ah well, eh?
So instead here is a furious track from Brooklyn duo Buke And Gass. They make an extraordinary amount of noise for two people, apparently thanks to a veritable orgy of footpedals. Through those pedals they play instruments of their own creation: the buke is a bastardised baritone ukelele, and the gass is, unsurprisingly, a combination of a guitar and a bass.
‘Page Break’ is taken from the pair’s forthcoming album Riposte, which is out now on Brassland. A lucky few thousand people can catch them supporting Lou Reed (actually a fantastic match) at Hammersmith Apollo next month.
