Brandon Can’t Dance reflects on teenage years with superb slacker rock song “17”
"(Writing music) is more therapy than anything for me. I like to finish a song in a day if possible," says Philadelphia's exciting new export Brandon Can’t Dance.
Channelling the attitude of '90s Sub Pop-inflected grunge and Idiot-era Iggy Pop, the lead single from the soloist Brandon Ayres' debut EP LXVE may provide some clues as to what runs through his talented head.
“'17' is a current reflection on my later teenage years," Ayres says. He's keen to add, however, that the song's meaning is not limited to his interpretation.
"I like to leave gaps and room lyrically for people to make their own assumptions as well. It's pretty vague but just enough of a base to let listeners minds wander, if they're into that sort of thing.”
A cult figure in Philly's DIY scene, Ayres has shared stages with the likes of Eskimeaux, LVL UP and Alex G. He's talked about possibly "jamming" with the latter, a fellow Philly native, while they're on tour together next month.
"There was this experimental collective of bands I got into when I was 16 called Faux Fetus Collective. It was an online collective of mainly Philly bands that were totally weird, heavy, and beautiful, and I became obsessed with the people associated with it - it changed my life,” Ayres says.
Heavy and beautiful itself, stream "17" below now. Brandon Can't Dance's new EP LXVE is released via Lucky Number today.
