Fresh off the back of a stellar performance at this year’s The Great Escape, Blessa have just released a new track from their forthcoming new EP Love is an Evol Word, out this June.
While Blessa may have all the quintessential trademarks of a Sheffield-based band (a quirky unusual sound, MJ of Hookworms in the production chair), there’s something at the band’s core that makes them distinctly different from most of the emerging talent out there. “Open Fields” isn’t quite synth-pop, chill-wave or even more straight forward indie rock, it’s somewhere between the backing soundtrack of a John Waters film and modern alt-pop music.
With an infectious bass line, sun drenched guitars and retro vocals, the track sounds is a nod to the 80s without sounding dated or like a Cliff Martinez (Drive) imitation. Or maybe it just sounds like something Ally Sheedy from The Breakfast Club would listen to if Pitchfork was around in the 80s.
Love Is An Evol Word is out on 23 June via Generator and Carmel Records.
