Odelay is more than a decade and a half old. How did that happen?
Beck’s post-1997 output has had peaks and troughs. The peaks have been high, the troughs often fist-clenchingly low. But throughout his twenty-odd-year career Beck Hansen has remained fascinating; a genuine eccentric in an ever-expanding sea of beige.
‘I Just Started Hating Some People Today’ is a one-off single for Jack White’s Third Man Records, recorded in Nashville while Beck was making his new album. It’s as unpredictable as we have come to expect from the LA artist, gradually shifting from bar-room fingerpicking to classic Hansen bass dirge, and all the way to guttural freak-out. It’s the sort of track at which you can’t help but laugh, absurd and hilarious as it is.
‘I Just Started Hating Some People Today’ is out now. H/t to DIY.
