Listen: Ballet School - "Cherish"
Ahead of their forthcoming debut album, The Dew Lasts An Hour, Berlin-based synthpop lot Ballet School reveal the record’s lead single, “Cherish”.
Name-checking the likes of Cocteau Twins and early Madonna is one thing, delivering upon those exalted names is quite another. Now signed to Bella Union, Ballet School seem to have perfected their retro, shimmering aesthetic for the release of “Cherish”.
Filled with playful 80s pop-isms à la Mads with chiming synths and driving electronic drums, there’s a certain smudging, ethereal quality about the song, frayed at the edges by cutting guitars. Vocally, Rosie Blair is more in the Liz Fraser camp; her voice dominating the track and delivering the melody, itself a thing of joy and beauty. With such a vigorous, entrancing style, “Cherish” is frankly impossible not to love.
The Dew Lasts An Hour is released on 9 September via Bella Union.
