“Grounded” is the smooth new track from North East London visual artist, DJ and producer AyChibs, written in anticipation for summer – but it’s also a reminder of why he's becoming so highly regarded.
Waiting for the rain to clear with bated breath has been most of the country’s overriding feeling recently, and AyChibs' new single is not going to help. It's relatively minimal in instrumentation, but it’s the sauntering garage beat driving at the heart of this new cut that gives it its distinctive energy. Full of light-hearted hooks and bouncing basslines, “Grounded” has a distinctly UK feel to it, reminiscent of Frankie Stew and Harvey Gunn’s lighter tunes.
On the formative moments of the track, Chibs describes, “I decided to go for a little garage bounce cos it was so vibesy, I don’t even know what inspired that, but it felt right. When I finished the beat, I played it in a few DJ sets to just see how it felt and everyone loved it.”
Playing as a DJ with radio shows on Knowave, NTS, Balamii and Rinse, Chibs is responsible for so much more than his own music. He is the founder of A Bit of Everything (ABOE), a creative enterprise that aims to connect artists and experiences, who've recently DJ'd at both Monte Booker’s and The Internet’s London parties. As well as this, his work in a visual art capacity for Tierra Whack’s CRACK Magazine feature and Lynda Dawn amongst others highlight AyChibs as something of a collaborative virtuoso.
Talking about the production of the track itself, Chibs highlights how this creative community spirit was central to the outcome of “Grounded”. After sending it to two of the track's collaborators, Weyland McKenzie and Careless, he explains that “a week later they both sent me back their versions of the track (which I wasn’t expecting) and I loved them both. I decided to put Weyland’s (with Penny Morr’s verse) and Careless’s version together to make one super smash hit song.”
With undoubtedly more to come and ABOE continuously bringing more ground-breakers together, expect more from this consistently eclectic young creative.
