Listen: Animal Language - "Get To Know Her" [Premiere]
Despite a spark in interest following their burst of restless, arresting charm on "Experiment", Animal Language have continued to remain fairly ambiguous. However, with an upcoming debut headline show at The Macbeth in London (14 January), the Brighton trio stride into the new year with lo-fi confidence via the jangly, off-kilter sublimity of "Get To Know Her".
With a punchy, tenacious arrangement that holds steady alongside raw, shouty vocals, "Get To Know Her" is almost a slacker's paean to want, but in the most laid back of senses; an ode to that eve so familiar need for attention from all the wrong people whilst also feigning apathy about it. Robust percussion and the concise yet jaunty refrains that reverberate throughout 3 solid, self-assured minutes cement the song as the group's upbeat, bold experiment in twisting alternative music in as many directions as possible.
The main lyrical reflections of Animal Language's latest offering all centre around acceptance: "I still hope that she sees me", "maybe I caught her eye", and "maybe I can win her over". As melodic as it is sporadic, "Get To Know Her" does exactly what the trio are asking themselves with an engaging and alluring confidence. If ever a track was the one to rouse attention that is so obviously deserved, this is it.
Animal Language headline The Macbeth, London on 14 January and play Highbury's (London) The Garage on 6 February.
