Amber Arcades proves that transition isn't always a bad thing on optimistic new track “It Changes”
Dutch-born musician Amber Arcades spent her life savings on a trip to New York to record her debut album Fading Lines in 2016. New track “It Changes” proves that her decision was the right one, and that she wont need to ask for her day job back any time soon.
“It Changes” is a song about the impossibility of guessing how things are going to work out, as Amber Arcades (real name Annelotte De Graaf) explains: “You think when starting something new you can kinda tell which way it will go, but you never do. I always try to aim for constancy and stability but things always get messier than I foresaw. And hey, maybe that’s actually what makes it worthwhile.”
It’s the sentiment of this final line that comes across most clearly on “It Changes”. The idea that even if everything around you is unfamiliar and different, it's probably not too bad after all. Optimism drips from De Graaf’s melodic vocals, whilst a jangly guitar pop melody drives the song forwards, resulting in something that goes a lot, lot deeper than your average feel good summer track.
