In celebration of her recent signing with Brooklyn label Color Station, Swedish-Londoner Akiine has today released her new single 'Destiny'. A darker and more leftfield number than her previous tracks, it's our Song of the Day.
With its dissonant 808 bass and dark reverb, "Destiny" is perhaps a little less accessible than some of Swedish-born Akiine Kivelä Ngarambe's older material. In fact, it differs quite significantly to tracks like "Sunglassery" and "Blueberry Mountains", which popularised her minimal, 'rythmn & bounce' sound.
You could argue that the music was going in this direction from what we saw with "Swans" in November, but now an even darker, rhythm-focussed edge has fully surfaced with this new drop. The pulsing bass mirrors Akiine's lyrical admission that 'my body's pumping for the weekend', but her voice remains as fragile and soft as ever.
Akiine plays London's Old Blue Last with fellow labelmate Bewilderbeast on 3 March. "Destiny" is available as a free download for a week from today. Her new album is expected late summer 2015.
