East coast rising star 070 Shake broods on the nocturnal “Under The Moon”
070 Shake exudes vehemence in the pared-back music video accompanying “Under The Moon”, from her upcoming debut album Modus Vivendi.
22-year-old Danielle Balbuena (aka 070 Shake) has superstardom within touching distance as support grows thanks to her sonically diverse sounds, deep vocals calling for intrigue and affiliation with respected rappers through her signing to Kanye West's G.O.O.D label.
Hailing from New Jersey, Balbuena’s soulful and androgynous vocals carefully weave their way through late-night introspection on “Under The Moon”, perfectly complementing the merging of new wave, post punk and R&B sounds that dominate the track. Her style is transformative with a dark, brooding exterior thrown off by the softer emotional depth of her lyrics.
Although 070 Shake's fanbase expanded thanks to her hit “Trust Nobody”, her appeal took off when she contributed to Kanye West’s “Ghost Town” from his 2018 album Ye. Since then, her unique style of writing has been popping up everywhere with features on tracks by Mark E. Bassy and DJ Khaled.
When discussing her approach to writing, Balbuena says, “I just really go with how I feel in the moment, and then that’s where the writing comes from. It’s like an ongoing disperse of words when I feel something.”
The accompanying video holds a lo-fi aesthetic with an '80s vibe thanks to its grainy visuals and pops of neon, mirroring the minimalism of the production with its fuzzy scattered synths interfering with pulse-like drums, dominating bassline and other-worldly vocals.
