Welcome back to our increasingly sporadic mixtape feature. You should know the deal by now…We pick a band / artist / label we love; ask them to make us a playlist of their favourite songs, adding in a brief explanation as to why they picked each track; we post said playlist for your aural satisfaction.
Team Ghost are a band who have been on constant rotation at TLOBF Towers for a fair few months now. Signed to the consistently worthwhile Sonic Cathedral, their debut EP You Never Did Anything Wrong To Me was a masterstroke in applying a new direction to the currently (over?)crowded shoegaze revival. Read the TLOBF review here.
Here, Team Ghost take us on a trip through their dusty record collection. Unearthing classics from their musical touchstones Drop Nineteens and Fad Gadgets to more recent discoveries Small Black and Maps. Plus lots, lots more. Dive straight in via the MixCloud link below, or download the entire mix in mp3 format at the bottom of the post.
Maps: ‘To The Sky (M83 mix)’
This remix is amazing, one of the best things Anthony (Gonzalez, M83) ever did. This just tears me up. Nothing more to say, you just have to listen!!
Drop Nineteens: ‘Angel’
One of the best shoegaze bands, and one of my favourite bands ever. Delaware is a wicked album. This track is a perfect love song. I love this crazy guitar solo.
Stereolab: ‘French Disko’
I wanted to play French bands in this mix, well, I almost did it! Stereolab is one of my biggest influences, I like the way they stay on one chord only, their songs could last for hours!!!
JJ Burnel: ‘Euroman’
I’m a huge fan of The Stranglers, but I discovered this record very recently, as a journalist mentioned it in a review of our EP. This tune is amazing and, once again, half a french song!!!
Fad Gadget: ‘Love Parasite’
As Echo & The Bunnymen deserved to be more famous than U2, Fad Gadget deserved to become as famous as Depeche Mode. Well, it’s way darker, but it’s brilliant. I had the chance to see him live a few weeks before he died. He’s my hero!!!
Dark Day: ‘Nudes In The Forest’
I like this track. OK, OK, there’s a gothic teenager hidden inside of me…
Medicine: ‘One More’
Back to shoegazing! My favorite track off Medicine. This song must be played loud with headphones. Who’s afraid to be deaf at 40 anyway?
Dinosaur Jr: ‘Budge’
J Mascis is God!! My favourite band with Sonic Youth when I was a kid. He’s also the greatest guitarist I’ve ever seen. His recent albums are still very good.
Pavement: ‘Grounded’
Pavement! One of my favourites. I saw them live a few weeks ago, it was amazing! They still look so young. Hey, they deserved to be as famous as Nirvana.
Small Black: ‘Weird Machines’
Quite a recent song at last! I like Small Black, they deserve to be as famous as… OK, OK, I stop.
