Yaeger (aka Sweden's Hanna Jäger) has released her biggest pop track to date, after an exemplary output for 2019, regularly delivering refreshing and bold alt-pop (remember April's “I Don't Even Know What I'm Saying”?).
Studying songwriting at Rytmus, whose alumni includes Robyn and Tove Lo, it's unsurprising that this young artist has an instinctual ability for weaving narratives of heartbreak and destruction into lightweight and airy track. “Infected” is the most self-assured that Yaeger has sounded, as she calls out unacceptable behaviour and retains a sense of dark whimsy with the idea that hearts can infect each other.
Speaking about her new song and its accompanying video, Yaeger says: "I tried to trap a whole lot of angry feelings into a song and also show that in the music video.” She continues, “but in the video you see me turn something angry and sad around and make it something happy in the end. When you cross bitter people with bad energy in your life, just turn those suckers into a joke with your besties and move on. Be the happy ones!”
As she traverses the lanes of alternative, electronic and R&B in a manner reminiscent of Lana or Lykke, there’s a lot to be excited about and could see this young Swede follow in a long line of breakouts from a country famed for its pop exports.
Yaeger's new EP will be released in November with her new track sitting alongside her sweeping, dramatic preceding single “Watch Him Fall”.
