Wolfjay and Austen share soaring synth-pop isolation collaboration “Very Soon, Very Frequent"
Quarantining together in Melbourne, alt-pop artists Wolfjay and Austen made the first version of this track from Middle Kids, Tame Impala and G Flip stems.
The dreamy synthscape created by the pair does an amazing job capturing the joy in the fleeting circumstances the song describes. Wolfjay adds that "the song is about crossing paths with someone at the exact moment you can help them and they can help you, and even if it’s only for a little while, it’s exactly what you both need."
Originally cooked up for Australian tastemaker radio station Triple J's #DIYSupergroup competition, the original recording of the track, just "Very Soon", sampled the works of Middle Kids, Tame Impala and G Flip. Shortlisted, they made it as one of five finalists but were beaten to the top spot by elusive Sydney-based act ROYBOY.
Flatmates first, collaborators second, this Wolfjay and Austen song could have only happened in these unique circumstances. "I had just gotten to New York to play my first International shows when COVID-19 hit and the festival I was there for was cancelled,” Wolfjay explains. "We got straight on a plane back to Melbourne and went into quarantine, which was where "Very Soon, Very Frequent" was born.
This sparkling new track follows Wolfjay's three-track Together EP and this year's "In Memory Of". Austen's latest release features a pair of remixes of her 2019 latest single "Money", including this impressive rework from fellow Aussie artist HANDSOME.
Wolfjay is also donating all royalties and sales from the track, and the rest of their discography for June and July, to Black Rainbow. On Instagram, they explain "[the charity] do a lot of crucial work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members of the LGBTQIA+ community."
