Will Joseph Cook adds “Hearse” to his increasingly attention-grabbing collection
Ever since he appeared with the frenetic, Darwin Deez-inspired “Streets Of Paris” at the beginning of the year, Will Joseph Cook has been finding his feet and a growing number of fans through brilliantly satisfying and subtly poignant (see the wonderful “Message”) pop songwriting.
Now the 18-year-old Atlantic-signee has unveiled the second track from his Proof Enough EP along with news of a headline London show at The Lexington in London on 14 September.
“Hearse” shows yet another side to his increasingly diverse style: opening with dark acoustic work, his languid vocal creates a gently unsettling atmosphere before the track explodes into a typically glistening and moreish chorus, aligning with its earworm predecessor “Beach”.
“I know it’s not what you wanted/probably not what you needed but baby I’m leaving,” the refrain pines as joyous melody juxtaposes melancholic lyrics. Cook shows off his seemingly effortless knack for songwriting and composing, recording all tracks with similarly up-and-coming producer Hugh Worskett in Bermondsey during clearly very productive breaks from school.
