White Balance share polished single "Girl" from the depths of Finland's darkest days
Helsinki electro-pop duo White Balance return with the bubbly sheen of new single "Girl".
White Balance are vocalist Maaria Nuoranne and producer Ilari Heinilä, who began their friendship sharing songs they liked with each other over MSN Messenger.
"Girl" is full of hope, despite being about looking for a way out during the darkest months of the year in Finland. The hook "I'm a royal in this rotten town" perhaps captures the feeling of the track in the best way, its juxtaposition of the grandeur of royality with the decaying state of the surrounding society is part of a bigger narrative within the song's lyrics as the band tell us.
“Writing this piece I felt like I was writing a letter to my younger self. It took so much courage to trust your own choices and choose your own path back then. And it's still not simple, as we're surrounded by all kind of voices telling us what to do. It's important to isolate your own voice from that racket,” Nouranne explains. “[the new single] is an anthem dedicated to all of you who, despite struggling, have the courage to trust your instincts.”
Taken from the pair's forthcoming debut album, with a release expected this summer, "Girl" adds to world they've already created with singles like "Home" and "Hunter".
