Wesley Gonzales today unveils his debut Moshi Moshi single "I Spoke To Euan".
Gonzales was well known in London for his guitar shredding pop-punk band Let's Wrestle with whom he toured for ten years with moderate success. Last year, the band members decided to leave the best part of their youth behind them and played a feral final show at the 100 Club. Fortunately for fans of Let's Wrestle, frontman Gonzales wasn't happy to call it a day altogether, and he immediately went about forming a solo band. Live, the band are an incredible force. Gonzales' gripping stage presence is helped along by a star-studded experimental pop ensemble that includes Euan Hinshelwood from Younghusband and Meilyr Jones on synth and sax. They are easily one of London's best. Now, Gonzalez does his live sound justice on "I Spoke To Euan". The track incorporates hazy, reverberating synth with a steadily building rhythm section, and woozy sax lines. Together, Wesley's bandmates come together as a unique whole, providing the ultimate backdrop to Gonzalez' theatrical off-kilter pop vocal delivery that's indebted to Todd Rungrdren, Emmitt Rhodes, and John Lennon. Thematically, the "I Spoke To Euan" is exemplary of a Gonzales' heart-on-sleeve approach to songwriting that informs all of his current live set. The words are delivered with such conviction as the venom that made him such a great punk frontman remains, even if the distorted guitars have gone. Gonzalez notes that the "lyrics are rooted in my disgust with a lot of the modern world, and feeling powerless as a young person in our society”. The sincerity is truly felt. Thanks to such a convincing debut by this group of seriously talented musicians, the emotional, manic, character of Gonzales is someone we'll undoubtedly be seeing a lot more of in the coming months. This is far more than a solo project for the sake of it - this music feels urgent and necessary, pushing the boundaries of creativity in pop.
Gonzalez' debut AA single (flip side "Come Through and See Me") is released on 20 May via Moshi Moshi Records Singles Club. Live dates below.
