Water From Your Eyes unveil the mellow synth pop sounds of "Cold Stare"
Chicago/NYC duo Water From Your Eyes are releasing their brand new track today, as the latest installment of RIP Records' monthly "Introducing" series.
Water From Your Eyes work long-distance; with Nate Amos based in Chicago and singer Rachel Brown based in New York, the pair only come together to work on the lyrics and vocals.
"Cold Stare" is a song of contrasts. While the brightly buzzing synths and brisk drum patters suggest an upbeat pop air, Brown's pleasingly deadpan delivery and lyrics tell a different story. As she intones "you say I'm unpredictable but you don’t trust me to be / I say I'm anything that makes me seem more like what you are" it conjures feelings of isolation. It's about fear of missing out; not wanting to be at the party, but wanting to be wanted, and when in the position of actually being at the party every single sinew of you sings with anxiety and tells you to "GET OUT". "Cold Stare" is a feedback loop, a vicious circle made to sound like the most enticing of prospects.
