Watch: Yushichi – Nathaline Kerosene [Premiere]
Holed up in Stockholm, Sweden but with childhood roots planted firmly in Canada and Japan, Yushichi has been bubbling under the radar for the past eight or so months – quietly posting understated pop gems to his Soundcloud account, the songs made with the help of a “time machine built from parts of an MPC60 and a Minimoog”. Here, his music is given a beautiful visual accompaniment from the creative minds of director Anders Hazelius and producer Engelbrekt Krantz.
On listening to ‘Nathaline Kerosene’ for the first time, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a lost recording from West Coast Sweden’s The Embassy or Lake Heartbeat: awash with a warm yacht rock breeze, Yushichi’s vocal reminiscent of Lake Heartbeat / Brainpool’s Janne Kask – all romantic whispers and nostalgic longing.
A love song of divine innocence, Yushichi says the track is about “the feeling of being a little in love with someone — how you dream about asking her out but how hard it is to actually do it. At the same time, it’s a reminder that love does not always have to look like it usually does.”
