Hot on the heels from his previous release, "Buried", there's evidently no stopping Shlohmo with his choice of incredibly ominous visuals to accompany the intimidating, eerie instrumentals of "Beams".
The relentless, unpredictable beat is undoubtedly gripping, especially when teamed with Jack Irving's visuals, which, shot on an iPhone, truly represents both the freedom of youth, as well as highlighting the sheer stupidity and carelessness that most of us have probably experienced at some point (though probably not to this extent). With Irving's quick cuts of the jaw-dropping combination of events, it's difficult to bring the 'experience' thought forward, particularly when the opening shot is taken hanging off the back of a subway.
Nonetheless, Shlohmo's subtle build up of tension is simply elevated by the erratic videos, which, with the unremitting beat, give the visuals an odd euphoria. As "Beams" ascends to its climax, the rapid-fire cuts catch up with the beat, showcasing the disoriented absurdity of the youth in L.A.
"Beams" is the third single to be released off Shlohmo's upcoming, second album Dark Red, which is out 7 April via True Panther/WeDidIt.
