Watch: Mac Demarco covers Weezer classic track 'Undone (The Sweater Song)'
Mac DeMarco is the best kind of Weezer-influenced musician; if his excellent 2012 LP 2 is anything to go by, he clearly stopped taking cues the moment they turned rubbish.
So, the idea of having to turn in a version of Blue Album classic ‘Undone (The Sweater Song)’ for their visit to the AV Club sounds like it wouldn’t stretch Mac or his band too much. His initial claim that he learnt the song in the two and a half hour drive over to the studio struck me as bullshit – surely DeMarco could turn in a passable cover of every track on The Blue Album with his eyes closed?
Then the fourpiece launch into the song – ad-libbing all of the spoken word verses, making up their own solos, struggling to reach the high notes in the chorus – and the assertion becomes a little more believable.
It sounds haphazard in places, but looks like the greatest fun, especially in the middle eight where they all seem genuinely bemused as to why they’re playing it quite so loudly. One imagines this is the kind of the thing Mac DeMarco gets up to when his band have got ten minutes left in the practice room and he’s become bored of his own songs.
