Having already worked with ex-The Coral member Bill Ryder-Jones, secured support slots with Wild Beasts and PINS, BIRD have already had a pretty decent start. The Liverpool foursome, having signed to hometown label Baltic Records are due to release their debut album and, with it, the superbly haunting “The Rain Song”.
An atmospheric slice of dark rock, “The Rain Song” is a richly layered and hauntingly beautiful track. The pounding march of drums and thunderclaps of percussion create the background of the track’s hazy, dream-like flow. Layered, reverb driven guitars and synths add to the woozy, floating soundscapes, pushing you into a world that is at once mesmerising and uneasy, possessed with a foreboding feeling. Adele Emmas’ siren-like vocals also help to enhance this overwhelming sense of mystery and magic.
The video itself features Emmas – like a number of music videos these days – staring straight into the camera as she gets drenched in rain. The flashes of lightning and glimpses of what seems to be an alternative Emmas, one haunted by something (perhaps her decision to not wear waterproof mascara), only reinforce the beautifully troubled sense that permeates the song.
With their debut album, My Fear and Me, due out in May, “The Rain Song” (out 24 February) is the perfect way for BIRD to properly introduce themselves to the world.
