Wassailer opts for minimalism on the introspective "Three Dots In a Bubble"
We Were Evergreen's multi-instrumentalist William Serfass, aka Wassailer, is back with "Three Dots In a Bubble", a third taster of his forthcoming debut solo album i, the bastard.
After releasing the heartfelt "242" last month, Wassailer chooses a more minimalist route for "Three Dots In a Bubble", another consistently paced track that focuses on Serfass' emotive vocal delivery.
The steady percussion and twangy guitar melody sets the pace for Wassailer's new track before Serfass' distinct vocals are introduced. The first verse sees Wassailer make various statements such as "I'm so bored" and "I'm so old", backed by the steady instrumentation and small pulses of distorted vocal between lines. The track title is also thrown in as a ghostly whisper between lines, emphasising the first person narrative of the song.
Wassailer's soothing vocals elevate the hypnotic, cyclical instrumentation, acting as the beat of a diary entry that sees Wassailer reflect on his emotions. As the song progrsses, Wassailer adds subtle keys and delicate vocal layers that echo the personal nature of the song, providing a solid foundation for Wassailer's scaling vocals.
Serfass says of his latest outing, "I was very self-conscious about sounding too much like a straight white depressed single and self-centered bloke, so the song is about that cringey feeling you get when you hear yourself being honest about your own emotions. It’s such a fine line between being truthful and being whiny."
