Glasgow's Walt Disco release non-conformist piece of riotous glam “Cut Your Hair”
Weeks into lockdown and Walt Disco’s “Cut Your Hair” does not need to tempt us any further into doing so.
In a desperate bid to clear up your scraggily mop, be prepared to grab the kitchen scissors while dancing feverishly to the latest offering from six piece Walt Disco. Taking a swipe at the judgemental and honouring self-expression, “Cut Your Hair” offers no room for introduction, hitting you instantly with James Power’s distinctively gutsy vocals.
Working with producer Thomas McNeice (bassist of Gang of Four) on the single, Walt Disco’s unique sound pulls influences graciously from glam rock, pop and new-wave. Complete with '80s keys and jangly guitars, the track is a cohesive yet wonderfully chaotic glam-pop dance bop.
Power explains, "'Cut Your Hair' was written as a wee fun jibe at people passing judgement to those who are just being themselves. I think older generations can learn a lot from us YOUNG HARD AND HANDSOME folk. I mean our generation are the most tolerant and accepting, ever, and we should all aspire to live in a world where self expression and free speech is championed."
Importantly, the band don't want to be thought of as a pastiche of their past inspirations. “Not only do we love this music but we also want to be a band for 2020 and the future,” explains Power, “so we wanted to move away from the sounds of the new wave bands that inspired our formation and songwriting.”
Walt Disco have presented us with an anthem whose celebration of individuality and contempt for judgement falls harmoniously within our current creative landscape. By not confining itself, “Cut You Hair” shows us that refusing to fit in yields exciting, fun results.
