Listen: Violet Skies - "Power" (Kanye West rework)
Hot on the heels of the driving, dynamic force of “Dragons”, Welsh singer-songwriter Violet Skies returns with “Power”, a clever turn on the Kanye West classic of the same name.
With production help from Ben Freeze (Rudimental), Skies strips away the excesses of the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy single. In fact, despite some noticeable similarities—a re-recording of the trademark Continent Number 6 “yeaaaa” by Skies herself, the recycling of the first two lines of the chorus—Skies’ “Power” shares little in common with ‘Ye’s version.
The singer doesn’t lose the aggressiveness of the original, however. Over marching drums, expertly subtle guitar and a chiming piano, she rails against the dangers of power and, perhaps, the powers that be. Where Kanye was aggrandizing, Violet admonishes. “Power can be corruption if you get too near”, after all.
Violet Skies plays The Courtyard Theatre, London on 9 June. You can pre-order her Dragons EP, expected 22 June, here.
