Australian singer/songwriter Vera Blue shares stunning single "All The Pretty Girls"
Vera Blue accelerates her sparkling folk-infused pop and is ever-enchanting with her seemingly endless vocal range.
While winter takes hold here in the UK, it's summer in Australia and Vera Blue has the perfect track to heat you up wherever you are. "All The Pretty Girls" merges a folk-inspired innoncence and naiveté that is masked by the crescendo of modern influences that come into play.
The singer/songwriter released her breathtaking debut album Perennial last year and the new single comes alongside a live album recorded at The Forum in Melbourne which captures the unique, arresting qualities of Blue's voice.
Reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac and HAIM, the dreamy, guitar-strum-led production plays off against Blue's crystalline vocals. The track is all about dealing with your insecurities within the first moments of a relationship, a warning of sorts for the hopeless romantics who get hurt too easily just as she reminds herself in the chorus "girl, don't get too close.
We caught up with Blue to find out about the inspiraton behind the cinematic video for the track and what's been going on behind the scenes.
BEST FIT: This year has gone by so fast, how’s 2018 treating you?
VERA BLUE: "2018 has been one of the greatest years for me. I’ve had the opportunity to do lots of overseas touring; touring my album in Australia, UK, Europe and US, performed at Lollapalooza, and one of my favourite festival tours in Australia, Groovin the Moo. Also, it’s been really good to have some time to collaborate and make some new music for next year, including "All The Pretty Girls", which I’ve just released, and is the start of a new phase."
Any particular highlights from touring or recording?
"Performing 'Lady Powers' on my biggest Australian tour to date, surrounded by my female friends in the industry and personal life was a massive highlight from this year. And throwing roses to the crowd, I always look forward to that moment at the end of the set. It’s pretty magical to have a connection with my audience at the end of the show."
Let’s talk about the new single, when did you write this one?
"I was on a writing trip in LA, and wrote the track with a couple of my friends. It was one of those moments when the song was written, that I just wanted to release it as soon as possible. I wanted it to be out, ready for the energy of the summer and festival season coming out, it just felt like the right time. "All The Pretty Girls" is a cheeky play on stereotype, which is also kinda cruel. It’s kind of like I’m judging a book by it’s cover, but we all do. It’s also a self-protection song about avoiding heartbreak and getting hurt by someone you think makes all the girls cry."
What inspirations help you with the creative process of making music?
"Listening to music inspires me - new and old. Experiencing life I guess, relationships and moments, being open minded as well to other forms of music, and being hyperaware of what’s around me. Listening in to people’s conversations, there’s so many things I hear that people have said and done and I just want to put it into a song."
The music video is stunning, can you tell us a little more about that?
"I wanted it to be a sweet blend of quirky, playful and emotional. The song itself is quite light hearted with its summery upbeat production but still has a little sadness to it, so I wanted the clip to align with the sound. Jared’s treatment was exactly what I wanted, with beautiful visual metaphors and romantic characters struggling with insecurities and fears of being ‘ghosted’ by someone they really like, but all at the same time trying to protect themselves from getting hurt. I wanted to involve actors in this clip to give it more of a relatable feel and showed the different dynamics in young relationships and the things they do together in the early stages and getting to know each other. I love performing and dancing, it’s part of who I am as an artist and person, so being able to do that in film clips is one of my favourite things and will always be seen. So I was super happy the treatment had some cameo high fashion performance moments in there. "
Are you working on more new music, what’s next?
"Yes, always! At the moment I’m just happy to be writing lots of music and experimenting, and releasing what feels right."
