Last year’s assured “Cry No More” put Vaults on a multitude of ‘next big thing’ lists, and their return with “Premonitions” will not dissuade anybody.
Like its predecessor, new track “Premonitions” has synth-pop fragility about it but also shows that Vaults are both inventive and able to write tunes that stay with you. It opens with this a forlorn sound, swathed in electro-hue and synths, but with a crackling beat that precedes singer Blythe Pepino’s breathy but heart-warming vocal. As the chorus approaches, so the music is sugared with a denser accompaniment and harmonies, but it’s the melody that is the real startling factor in “Premonitions”.
The new single is out on 9 June. Catch the band at London’s Courtyard Theatre on 15 May as well as at Latitude Festival and Festival No. 6 this summer.
