"Upside Down" is the newest twisted, candy-coloured cut from Elliot Lee
Following on from January's "Mirror", Elliot Lee maintains her candyfloss sweetness whilst embracing a darker sound on newest single "Upside Down".
On "Upside Down", the Brooklyn-based artist collages cross-genre elements to create an eclectic and often unpredicatable new sound. Layers of spiky stacatto string samples mesh with low-fi beats and pseudo-rap vocals, giving way to subtle harmonies on the sing-song chrous. The influence of genre-hopping Ohio duo Twenty One Pilots glimmers through a candy-coloured sheen that's all Lee's own as she wrenches a similar twisted lyricism from her claustrophobic mental state.
"Upside Down" sees Lee flip the experience of being a trodden-down underdog on its head, turning it into something that's as unnerving to listen to as it is fun.
"It feels so satisfying to wrap up uncomfortable messages in pretty, stomachable packages that make people want to dance and sing but also low-key cry about all of the sadness in the world at the same time," she explains of her musical goal.
