Uma E Fernqvist turns to trip-hop for inspiration on the down-tempo "For U"
With two decades of work in performing arts behind her, Swedish artist Uma E Fernqvist blurs together myriads of influences to create the down-tempo ambience of "For U".
The mesmerising track, inspired by 90s trip-hop, places Fernqvist in a similar bracket to artists such as Lamb and Portishead. Dance elements hum through stretches of glacial distance, a persistent beat drawing measured structure from the spacious cut. The video is similarly minimal, with thoughtfully shot dancers shot in slow motion in the glow of an anonymous warehouse space.
"For U" is taken from Fernqvist's most recent release Reverse, a four-track EP on which it is the atmospheric closer. Released earlier this month, Reverse draws heavily on Fernqvist's experience in theatre to build its own subtle drama.
"'For U' is about a wait that almost makes you destructively paralyzed or puts you in a vacuum of beautiful melancholy," Fernqvist says of the track. "A wait for someone... or as for me, for myself. With the video we wanted to find that other dimension of time and space, escape… in finding something... back to something…"
