17-year-old TS Graye arrives with atmospheric debut single "MY2"
With her Dua Lipa-esque vocal and mature, fully-formed pop sound, it's hard to believe TS Graye is just a teenager from the West Country.
Debut single "MY2" is an atmospheric introduction to the brand new star, featuring skittering beats against an organ-like synth backdrop. Elevated by production from Louis Mattrs, her vocal is a strong asset to the slick, sophisticated sound she's already cultivating, underpinned by trip-hop influences from nearby Bristol.
"MY2" stands for "murder you too", the track's standout lyric. Laced with a cocktail of emotions, it can be played off as bitingly sardonic or channeling the pain of heartbreak. Often heavily distorted, its first appearance signals the song's switch from delicate balladry to grinding electro-pop.
"I wrote 'MY2' after finding out that someone I loved had broken my trust," Graye explains. "It reflects the different and conflicting emotions I felt in the aftermath of that situation. At first, I play it off and try to fool myself that I’m cool with what has happened, but, in reality, I'm angry and hurting, hence the aggressive switch in the lyrics and production. I think you have to acknowledge and work through those feelings to accept the shit that happens and leave it in the past." Wise words from one so young!
