Listen: Troyka – “Life Was Transient” [Premiere]
Troyka is not your standard jazz trio. Influenced by the likes of Aphex Twin, Deerhoof, and American blues guitarist Albert King, London-based Chris Montague (guitars), Joshua Blackmore (drums) and Kit Downes (Hammond/synths) take jazz experimentation to new levels with the frenetic single “Life Was Transient”, premiering today on Best Fit.
“Life Was Transient” fuses jazz aesthetics with trippy electro beats and ever-shifting time signatures. Ripples of Hammond organ, rat-a-tat drums and palm-muted guitar create an atmosphere bursting with nervous energy. This complex and catchy single is culled from the upcoming album Ornithophobia, the band’s third LP and their first released via Naim Jazz.
Speaking about the track, the band said: "'Life Was Transient' was written by the co-producer of the new album, Petter Eldh. It was a big deal for us, because we were so used to laying down tracks we’d written ourselves. We also knew what Petter would send over from Berlin would be a challenge! So we got together in our studio in Acton and found our way through this tune, then Petter took the files back to Berlin. The finished article is a stand out track from the album for us, because it pushed us on many levels. What you hear is synth/hammond, guitar and drums, with closeness and grit but somehow with Petter’s stunning post-production it better reflects some of the influences that we sometimes find a challenge to articulate as a live three-piece."
Ornithophobia will release on 26 January in 180 gram LP, CD, and digital formats. Catch Troyka live in 2015 during their UK tour, including an LP launch party at Rich Mix in London on 12 February:
